Upon returning home, he discovers that the once friendly townsfolk will have nothing to do with him, since they continue to believe he killed the detective. The only supporters Jones has are a small boy who idolizes him (Ernest) and his former sweetheart (Sayers). Jones spends the rest of the film tracking down the real killer and brings him to justice.
